Sodium hydrosulfite – Na2S2O4: Widely used in the textile and dyeing industry; for bleaching pulp, kaolin clay, and food; and as a reducing agent in organic synthesis.
Sodium hydrosulfite is primarily used to reduce insoluble vat dyes into a soluble form in alkaline solutions for dyeing cellulose-based fibers.
Sodium hydrosulfite can also be used to bleach silk and as a supplementary bleaching agent for cotton fabrics.
Additionally, Sodium hydrosulfite is used to wash off certain dyes from fabrics after dyeing, to clean dyeing machines, or during stripping processes (for disperse dyes, direct dyes, and insoluble azo dyes, etc.).
Sodium hydrosulfite can be used for water treatment, gas purification, cleaning, and rust removal. It can be used in industrial processes as a sulfonating agent or as a source of sodium ions.
In photography, it can be used as a film developer, but it is rarely chosen. It tends to reduce the photosensitivity of the film and, if used incorrectly, quickly fades the image.
In biology, sodium hydrosulfite is used in biophysical experiments to lower the reduction potential of a solution.
In geology, it is used in chemical enhanced oil recovery to stabilize polyacrylamide polymers against degradation in the presence of iron.
It is also used in environmental applications to create a low Eh subsurface environment to reduce pollutants such as chromium.
Furthermore, sodium hydrosulfite is used in soil chemistry experiments to determine the amount of iron not present in original silicate minerals.
Sodium hydrosulfite is used in chemical enhanced oil recovery to stabilize certain substances in the presence of iron.
